Knot Untied – The following item which will be of local interest here, we clip from the Davenport Democrat, of last week: 9-26-1888

Yesterday afternoon a good looking young man, under 21 years of age, accompanied by an attorney, walked into the District Court room. The young man was married. He wanted a divorce. His name was Ellis B. Vannest. He stated to Judge Bannan that on July 27, 1886, in the town of Newton, Jasper County, Iowa, he was legally wedded to a young lady of that place. Prospects of happy years of wedded life seemed very bright; but in less than a week-only five days-the object of his affection, his newly made bride, deserted him. He had frequently solicited her to return and live with him, but this she refused to do. Would the court please give him a divorce? Judge Brannan passed upon the case and granted the decree. The young man was happy. Unlike many young men who have had similar experiences in the lottery of matrimony, he did not believe in putting off for years what could be done in a day. He was bound to remain single but a very short time. It was not his intention when he went into court to get a divorce for the purpose of living any length of time a bachelor’s life. Not he! When he left the court room he came down stairs, entered Clerk Birchard’s office to take a license to marry Miss Carrie H. Hoff. He presented a note to Clerk Birchard written by his father, who resides in Hastings, Neb., giving him permission to wed Miss Carrie Hoff. Clerk Birchard gave him a license and he left the office to hunt up a minister or justice of the peace to tie the nuptial knot for him, and the young lady whom he knew would not desert him in a week. ~ The Newton Journal, 9-26-1888.
