STEWART, R. N.
Farmer and stock raiser Sec. 18; P. O. Colfax; was born in West Virginia Jan. 18, 1834; came to this county in 1864; has 480 acres of land, valued at $19,200. In politics, Greenbacker. Has held the office of Justice of the Peace for the last eight years. Member of the Presbyterian Church. Married Lizzie McGUIRE; she was born in Carlton, Carroll Co., Ohio, Dec. 16, 1839; they have five children-Ida S., James M., Frank W., Mamie (died when she was 18 months old) and Annie L. Emigrated direct from Virginia to this county, where he has resided since; came through on the cars to Grinnell, Iowa, as far as the road was completed at that time; kept a stage station two years called Colfax P. O., from which the village of Colfax derived its name; Mr. S. had the honor of naming the place; kept about a thousand sheep; afterward went to Prairie City; bought grain one year; thence to his present farm; came here in limited circumstances, and to-day he ranks with the sound farmers of the county. Enlisted in what were known as the Hancock Blues; was on the Morgan raid, and helped to capture him; was also ordered to Wheeling, but was not in any more active service. ~ "Mound Prairie Township Biographies," The History of Jasper County, Iowa, (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
