McNEIL, William L.
Farmer; Sec. 24; P. O. Newton; born in Jefferson Co., Penn., Dec. 21, 1839. Married Sydney HALL in Iowa in 1868; she was born in Pennsylvania July 24, 1843; they have six children - Laura, Ross, Benjamin, Cora, Ruthe and Junieta. Has 160 acres of land, valued at $25 per acre. He enlisted in August, 1861, in 2d Iowa V.C.; was wounded twice; was in the battles of Farmington, Iuka, Corinth, Island No. 10, New Madrid, the taking of Corinth, and several small battles, and was under the command of Gen. A. J. Smith, Gen. Rosecrans, Gen. Grant, Gen. Pope and Gen. Hatch; served three years and was in all the principal engagements of the campaign; was discharged at the expiration of his term of service. He moved to Tama Co., Iowa, in 1857, improved a farm, and thence to Marshall Co., and thence to Jasper in 1871. Has held the offices of School Director, Road Supervisor, etc. They are members of the M. E. Church. His brother, J. C. McNEIL, was born in Pennsylvania April 21, 1844, and married Anna J. CROLL in Iowa in 1866; she was born in New York in 1850; had three children - Daisy Ann; two died in infancy. He came to Iowa in 1858. He enlisted in the same regiment with William, served in the same engagements, and re-enlisted in 1864, and served till the close of the war; he was in all the late battles after his re-enlistment, of his campaign.
