JOHNSTON, Sylvanus
Farmer; Sec. 20; P. O. Kellogg; born in Ohio Oct. 6, 1846; came to this county March 16, 1878, and rents 170 acres of land. His wife, Mary M. LEWIS, born Feb. 24, 1853; married Sept. 3, 1867; children's names are Cora, born Jan. 5, 1870; Owen, May 26, 1872; Belle May, May 9, 1875; Nelly, Dec. 10, 1877.Mr. J. enlisted in Co. B, 24th I. V. I., Aug. 2,1862, and fought in the battles of Coldwater, White River and siege of Vicksburg, and at Fort Gibson, Champion Hills, Jackson; and up Red River at Pleasant Hill, Yellow Bayou; also in Shenandoah Valley, at Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek and Woodstock. ~ " Hickory Grove Township Biographies," The History of Jasper County, Iowa, (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
