BUCKLEY, R. S.
Proprietor of coal bank, Sec. 33, P.O. Monroe. He is a native of Yorkshire, England, born 6 Feb 1828. He married Miss S. DUNKERLEY in England, and they came to this country in 1856. They settled in Rock Island Co., IL where they remained until 1866, and then moved to this county. They have five children living-- Samuel, married to Miss B,. Lackey; Melvina, married to Fremont Lummey; James, Mary and Robert. In 1871 Mr. Buckley was appointed Inspector of Coal Mines, which office he held until 1876, when he resigned, he was also a member of the board of Township Trustees from 1871 to 1876. He was elected Township Assessor in 1877, which office he now holds. He is also Secretary of School and has been for three years. He had one brother, James, in the army during the war of the rebellion, who served with the 126 IL V. C. He was severely wounded in the siege of Vicksburg, and died in the service 18 Jan 1864. He is a Republican, and owns 188 acres of land, 100 acres of it being underlaid with four feet of coal. ~ Fairview Township Biographies "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
