Came From Nauvoo
Dear Sir:
My parents, Simeon and Eliza Sager, emigrated from Nauvoo, Ill., in a covered wagon in the spring of 1864 to the northwest corner of Jasper county, building the first mill on Indian Creek, a saw mill and corn-cracker, the same summer, moving to Greencastle where he operated a small carpenter shop and living there until the Civil War. Then the family moved to Des Moines where he enlisted as a volunteer. He was in “40th Iowa” as a fifer. They moved back to Jasper County in ‘68 on what was the old “Mormon Trail” two miles and a half west of where Colfax is now, part of which is still used but few people still remember it.
I have no relics myself but know of some. Mrs. Sarah Miller’s house is real old. She is our nearest neighbor. If you will come out I will help you find some relics that I know of.
Yours truly, W. H. Sager; Mingo, Iowa
