LEEPER, John
Farmer; S. 35; P. O. Box Newton; born in Guernsey Co., Ohio, June 25, 1823; lived there until 1866, when he came to this county. He received a thorough common school education, and for several Winters followed teaching. Otherwise, he has always been engaged on a farm. Married Jeannet McCARTNEY Aug. 24, 1848; their family consists of nine children - William J., Albert G., Henry McCartney, Joseph W., Emma A., Mary E., Jennie A., Charles C. and Robert C. Mr. L. and wife are members of the United Presbyterian Church, in which he is a Ruling Elder; politically, he is a Republican; he has always taken an active interest in politics, having held various township offices since coming to this county, principally that of Trustee. In Ohio, he was a member of the militia, in which he held a commission as Lieutenant Colonel from Gov. Todd during the war, he was a Coroner and Enrolling Officer. Owns a farm of 380 acres of land, valued at $13,000. He is at present largely engaged in stock raising, having about 150 head of hogs, 100 head of sheep, sixty to seventy head of cattle, and ten to fifteen head of horses; is making a specialty of pure breeds, handling the Berkshire hogs, Durham cattle, and Cotswold sheep. ~ "Sherman Township Biographies," The History of Jasper County, Iowa, (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
