HOLLEN, E. N.
Farmer and Stock Raiser; S. 31; P. O. Newton; born in Pendleton Co., W. Va., Feb. 12, 1826. Married Almarine PARSONS in West Virginia in 1853. She was born in Randolph Co., W. Va. in 1828. Has 200 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre. Mr. H. learned the millwright trade and followed it several years in West Virginia. He moved into Jasper Co., Iowa in 1853; entered his farm and made all the improvements; at that time there were only four shanties in this section; hauled his first lumber and goods from Keokuk and Muscatine. Mr. H. has a good farm; with living water on each forty acres, under good improvements, good house and barn, five acres of forrest trees, a bearing orchard, and small fruits. Mr. H. has 100 head of cattle; keeps the blooded Short-Horn and Devon cattle. He has held the principal offices in the Jasper County Agricultural Society; has given his aid and attention to this Society and the improvement of stock since its origin; has given his support liberally and cheerfully for the schools and churches; holds the office of Class Steward and District Steward of the church several years.
