CRAWFORD, James R.
Farmer and Stock Raiser; S. 4; P. O. Newton; born in Pennsylvania, Nov. 25, 1832. Married Jennie VANLEW in Malaka, Iowa, in 1862. She was born in Pennsylvania, Aug. 26, 1836. They have five children - Arthur M., William M., Frank R., John W., and James C. He has 404 acres of land, valued at $40 per acre. Mr. C. moved in to Ohio with his father when a child, and moved to Iowa in 1854; entered land in Jasper and Taylor counties before the township was organized. Mr. C. is one of first pioneers in this county; had to haul his grain sixty miles, and his first lumber to build, 150 miles. He has given his support to build the first schools and churches in the Township; is now nicely situated with good improvements, bearing orchards, groves, etc. Mr. and Mrs. C. are members of the Congregational Church; he is a Republican in poilitics. ~ "Malaka Township Biographies," The History of Jasper County, Iowa, (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
