HART, Theodore
dealer in drugs and medicines, groceries, confectioneries, school books, etc.; Galesburg; was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, Dec. 5, 1819; moved with his parents to Carroll Co., Ohio, when about a year old; there he was raised on a farm till 25 years of age; he then studied medicine with J. F. LINDSAY, M. D., in Mechanicstown, Carroll County. July 24, 1850, he married Mary A. J. MORGAN; she was a native of Allegheny Co., Penn. He was then engaged for several years as clerk in the store of his wife's uncle, in Carrolltown; but in the Spring of 1855, moved to this county, settling about four miles north of this village, in what is now Buena Vista Township; here he commenced the practice of medicine in connection with farming till the Fall of 1858, when he sold out and moved to Albion, Marshall County; practiced medicine there till the Spring of 1860; he then went, with thousands of others, to Pike's Peak, but returned the same Fall and resumed his practice in Albion till the fall of 1862, when he went to Ohio; remained one year and returned to this county and bought a farm three miles north of this village; in 1867, he sold his farm and moved to Newton, where he resided two years, and then moved to this village and practiced medicine three years; but since then has devoted his whole time to the business in which he is now engaged. During the Kansas and Nebraska troubles, just before the war, he, with a neighbor, went to Kansas to look at the country; they were captured by the Proslavery party, under Capt. LOWE, and held prisoners at Hickory Point, about a week, when they made their escape and returned to their families. Mrs. HART died Jan. 11, 1878, in her 50th year. His children are William S., attorney at law; Cyrus W., Theodore, Laura W. and John F. During and since the war, Mr. H. was a Republican; but is now a Democrat. ~ Elk Creek Township Biographies "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
