LONG, POORBOUGH

LONG, Joseph; Farmer; Sec. 19; P. O. Greencastle; born in Somerset Co., Penn., July 4, 1825. He moved to Indiana, remained six years, and thence to Iowa in 1855. He was in the timber and shingle business while in Indiana. He took his present farm in its natural state, built his buildings, set out an orchard and made good improvements; has 160 acres of land, valued at $35 per acre. He married Lydia POORBOUGH in Pennsylvania in 1848. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1825. They have eight children - Henry, William, Charles, Mary, Ellen, Martha A., Louisa and Julia. Henry enlisted in the 40th I. V. I. and served three years and was discharged with his regiment at the close of the war. Mr. LONG's great-grandfather was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. Mr. and Mrs. L. are members of the Methodist Church. Republican. ~ "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878), 603.
