BATES, Mrs. Miriam; Farmer; Sec. 6; P. O. Peoria City; born in Fayette Co., Penn., April 23, 1833; is widow of John A. BATES (deceased). Was married in Illinois in 1851; she moved to Iowa in 1854. Mr. B. ran a flour-mill twenty years. They have ten children - Albert, Victory, Alice, Walter, Ursula, Minnie, Grant Sherman, Alva and John A. Mr. Bates died in the Fall of 1876; he left a good property which himself and wife had made by their energy. She superintends her farm with good success. She is very energetic and has the respect of all her acquaintances. Has 220 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre. ~ "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878), 598.
