DIED – Mrs. H. L. C. Vaughn passed to her Heavenly home Sunday, Feb. 2nd, from the home of her daughter, Mrs. I. W. Reed, at Loland, Mississippi, after an illness of nine weeks. Mrs. Vaughn was born at West Enosburn, Vt., Dec. 13, 1827, married to Royal B. Chase, Feb. 26, 1862, coming immediately to Maquoketa, Iowa. One daughter was born to them. Aug. 19, 1869, Mr. Chase was called to his reward and laid to rest in Mt. Hope, Dec. 5th 1871. Mrs. Chase was married to Rev. H. L. C. Vaughn, a Baptist minister, and for many years was a true helpmate in his work. Some twenty years ago he passed away at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Reed in Seattle, Washington. For the past twenty-four years she has made her home with her daughter and husband, Rev. L. W. Reed, a Baptist minister, who she loved as her own son. She was a woman of strong character, true to her friends, kind to all. Although but one daughter of her own, she was a true mother to five others, Mrs. Herrick of Vt., Mrs. A. L. Palmer of Seattle, daughters of Mr. Chase; Mrs. J. H. Scott who preceded her Oct. 30, a missionary in Osaka, Japan, Mrs. H. F. Aldrich, Spokane, Wash., and a son, C. F. Vaughn, who died in Portland, Ore., children of Rev. H. L. C. Vaughn. A Christian for many years, always faithful to her church duties making it a rule of her life never to neglect any service of the church and thus setting an example of faithfulness to the younger generation. She left an impression for good in the many places in which she lived, always careful and hopeful through many trials even down through the valley and shadows of death His rod and staff were her story. According to an expressed wish, she was brought back to Maquoketa, where she became a bride fifty-one years ago, and in the beautiful home of her life-time friends, Mr. Charlie Leach and family, brief funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. O. H. Read of Rock Island, assisted by Rev. Hanson of Maquoketa. All that living friends could do was done and she was laid to rest, by the side of her husband in Mt. Hope cemetery. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his Saints.”
