MAQUOKETA — James Reiter, 81, of Maquoketa, died Saturday at his home.

Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, with military honors accorded by Timber City American Legion Post 75 and O’Connor-Regenwether VFW Post 3633, Maquoketa, and Andrew AMVETS Post 62.

He was born July 19, 1925, in Maquoketa to Carlyle and Harriet Mitchell Reiter. He married Rozella Holtz on Dec. 24, 1948, in Maquoketa.

He graduated from Maquoketa High School and attended college in Ames.

He was a mine sweeper while serving with the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater.

He worked with Ed Kirchoff making ice cream for four years and then farmed from 1952 to 1976. He also sold Cargill seed corn for 20 years. After he quit farming, he opened up a welding shop, The Board of Trade.

He was a school board member with District No. 2 Country School in the early 1960s and was a member of Timber City American Legion Post 75, Maquoketa.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Patty (Dennis) Johnson of Maquoketa; one son, James Reiter of Davenport; one daughter-in-law, Judy Murphy of Peosta; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Franklin “Boo” (Ruby) Reiter of Henning, Minn.

Memorials may be given to Mercy Hospice, Clinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and one brother.
