Madeline M. Hughes, 96, of Maquoketa and formerly of Delmar, Iowa, died Monday evening, December 12, 2005, at Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa, following a short illness.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, December 16, 2005, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Delmar.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa, where a vigil service will be held at 4:30 p.m.
Madeline was born April 24, 1909, in Hurstville, Iowa, to Albert and Katherine (Keiffer) LaFayette. She married Leo E. Hughes on September 3, 1929, in Welton, Iowa. He died on April 18, 1988.
She was a homemaker.
She was a very active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Guild, Maquoketa. She enjoyed playing cards and was in many card groups.
She enjoyed crocheting and knitting, and she loved flowers and her garden. Madeline was the champion Scrabble player in the Hughes family.
She is survived by five sons, Donald Hughes, of Bryant, Paul (Denyse) Hughes, of Maquoketa, Robert (Barbara) Hughes, of Delmar, Thomas (Mary) Hughes, of Geneseo, Illinois, and Dennis (Debra) Hughes, of Park View; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Ales, of Maquoketa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a grandson, Dillon, on August 11, 1992, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Hughes, on June 2, 2002.
