MAQUOKETA — Gale W. Starr, age 89, of Maquoketa, died Monday at Jackson County Public Hospital, Maquoketa.

There will be a celebration of his life at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Carson and Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa, with the Rev. Ruth Ann Scott officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service time Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.

He was born October 1, 1916, in Welton to Joseph Walter and Nellie Kitts Starr. He married Vernita Bollen on Feb. 14, 1939, in Spragueville. She died in 1988.

He was a Baldwin High School graduate.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He worked in the foundry at Clinton Engines, Maquoketa, as a general laborer for more than 20 years before retiring in 1968.

Survivors include his children, Jeanette Horan of Maquoketa, Roger (Marcia) Starr of Houston and Gary (Jolene) Starr of Bellevue; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Betty Williams of Wyoming, Mich.; one brother, Walter Starr of DeWitt; and nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to DAC Inc., Maquoketa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters, two brothers and one grandchild.
