Maquoketa Excelsior 25 Feb 1897

Mary Ann Rathbun Wendel was born in Connecticut March 8, 1810, so was 87 years, 11 months and 21 days old at the time of her death. She was married at the age of 19 to John C. Wendel who has preceded her in death by about 32 years. They were the parents of ten children, Stirling, John T., George, Otto, Richland and Mrs. M. B. Clark all of Woodbury county, Iowa. Henry who died in the army and two dying in infancy. Charles with whom she spent her last days in this city. The family came to Maquoketa in 1843 and were among the pioneers who endured the privations of a new country. Mother Wendel was converted when quite young and united with the M.E. church at the age of 16 and has been a steadfast, consistent Christian ever since. Hers' was a practical religion that was always on the watch for some one who needed help and in those early days she found many who were glad to share the shelter of her roof and the hospitality of her board. The church has lost a loyal worker, her children a loving mother and the poor a liberal benefactor.
