Mary Melinda Reynolds was born in Linn County, Iowa, January 5, 1842 and died in Maquoketa August 28, 1907 at the age of 65 years, 7 months and 23 days. The deceased resided in Linn county and in Dubuque with her parents until about five years of age, since which time she has resided in, or near, Maquoketa, except one year spent in Davenport just after her marriage. She was married to Mr. John DePew on the 20th of September 1863. To this union were born three daughters, Mrs. Emma Altfillisch, Mrs. Carrie Barnes, and Miss Hattie, all of Maquoketa and vicinity. Mrs. DePew united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in her young womanhood, at what was then known as "The Norton School House" north of Delmar. She remained in the faith unto the end. Her husband deceased September 22, 1904. She was a woman of beautiful character, kind and unselfish with neighbors and friends, loving and wise with her family. "A kinder and better mother never lived" is the tribute of a daughter. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. L. L. Lockard, in her late home on Eliza street on Sabbath afternoon, September 1. The choir consisted of Mesdames Wilson and Kucheman, and Messrs Blake and Kozak, who rendered beautiful and appropriate music for the occasion. The pall bearers were, Messrs. M. Finton, D. H. Anderson, Geo. B. Perham, D. T. Cravens, J.S. Bilups and D. Marlow. A large number showed their respect for the memory of the deceased by their presence at the services. Interment in Mt. Hope.
