John H. Petersen, 49, was found dead in his car on a county road on Sunday, May 8, 1938, in rural Jackson County near Sabula.

The Jackson County coroner was called at 4:00 p.m., Sunday to the scene and his report stated that Mr. Petersen died of a self-inflicted gun shot to his head while sitting in his car parked along side the county road. His death has been ruled a suicide.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 11, in Miles. Burial will be in Miles Cemetery, Miles, Iowa.

John Henry Petersen was born November 30, 1888, in Teeds Grove, the son of Hans and Gertrude (Hansen) Petersen. He received his education in the Clinton County schools. He married Lucia Magdalena Thomsen on March 9, 1910, in Teeds Grove. He was employed as assistant cashier at Teeds Savings Bank in Teeds Grove and later was employed in the insurance business and has since held the position of postmaster in Sabula.

Surviving are his wife, Lucia; two daughters, Gladys (Radke) Collins and Violet Petersen, both of Sabula; and his father, Hans Petersen of Long Beach, CA.

He was preceded in death by his mother (Gertrude), one daughter (Gertrude E. Petersen) and his step-mother (Caroline).
