John Anderson, 70, of Maquoketa passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022, after a brief illness.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022, at First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at a later date at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.

Born August 9, 1951, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Gardner and Lucille (Morrison) Anderson, John was a 1969 graduate of Grinnell High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in animal science from Iowa State University.

For many years, John lived his love for flying. He worked at several small airports in Iowa, where he piloted corporate planes and gave flying lessons. After flying, he worked several different jobs, one of which was at a hotel in Cedar Rapids where he met his wife, Amy. They married April 25, 1998, in Maquoketa. John retired in 2017 after receiving a diagnosis of Stage 4 colon cancer. After his retirement, John found a love for baseball. He and Amy never missed a St. Louis Cardinals game.

John loved his pets and would take his pals Brystol and Molly on long walks in the grasslands at the Maquoketa Caves. He loved being outdoors and taking in the wonder of nature.

He is survived by his wife, Amy; brothers Charles Anderson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Richard (Sherri) Anderson of Springfield, Mo.; sisters Betty (Robin) Broders of Grinnell, Iowa, and Carol Brandt of Lynnville, Iowa; 14 nieces and nephews; and four great-nieces and -nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary; brothers, Robert and Raymond; and sister-in-law, Paula (Weaver) Anderson.
