Richard “Rich” John Shanahan, 74, of Springville, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 4, 2021, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Springville. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Clark Cemetery in Central City, Iowa, with full military honors. All guests are respectfully requested to wear a face mask and practice social distancing.

Rich was born on November 12, 1946, in Monticello, Iowa, the son of Cornelius and Estelle (Melloy) Shanahan. He was a graduate of Maquoketa High School in Maquoketa, Iowa. Rich served honorably in the United States Army, from 1970 to 1972, during the Vietnam War. On October 8, 1977, he was united in marriage to Shelley Joy Carpenter. Rich worked for Rockwell Collins for over 30 years. He was a member of the Springville American Legion Post #331, St. Isidore Catholic Church, a volunteer for the Big Brother Big Sisters program, and delivered Meals on Wheels. Rich enjoyed all sports, he loved watching baseball, football, basketball, and playing fast pitch softball and racquetball. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Rich is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 43 years, Shelley Shanahan of Springville; son, Brandon (Margo) Shanahan of Marion, Iowa; two grandchildren, Gracie and Ellie Luchtenburg; four sisters, Marie Shanahan, Joann Carruthers, Barb McPhail, and Debbie Gaschler all of Colorado; and two brothers, Bill (Maureen) Shanahan of Swisher, Iowa, and Phil Shanahan of Maquoketa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Sue Donohue; and five brothers, Jerry, Tom, Jim, Neil, and Steve Shanahan.
