One of City's Noblest Women Passes Away
After an illness of several months, Miss Elsie Taubman, one of Maquoketa's grandest women passed away at her home on Judson street about seven o'clock Sunday morning. Miss Taubman had long been identified with church, lodge and club work in our city and there is no fraternal or educational circle in our midst that will not keenly feel her untimely passing. A faithful member of the M. E. church, she, as a Christian exemplified her faith by her works; as a member of the Order of Eastern Star she proved an honor to the fraternity and her helpful counsel was oftimes invaluable to the progressiveness of the order; as a club worker her efforts were untiring to maintain, every high standard of social ideals and was honored some years ago by being elected president of the City Federation of Clubs.
Her entire life had been devoted to social, intellectual and christian uplift and her death marks the close of a most useful life. Miss Taubman was born October 19, 1866 on the old farm three miles northeast of Delmar and had spent her entire life in this community, having served as a teacher in both the Delmar and Maquoketa public schools. Several months ago her health began to fail and despite all medical skill and loving care, the burden was too great and she fell asleep to awaken in a happier land Sunday morning. She is survived by two sisters and one brother, and also her niece, Mrs. A. W. Sokol, to whom Miss Taubman seemed as a mother and with whom Mr. and Mrs. Sokol have for some time made their home. The funeral was held this afternoon, Rev. J. J. Kidder officiating. Interment was made at Delmar.
