Merlin Joseph Hughes (1931-2020)

Merlin “Mick” Joseph Hughes, 89, of Preston passed away on Sunday, December 6th at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport.

His visitation will be held on Thursday, December 10 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Dawson Funeral Services in Maquoketa. Burial will be at Pence Cemetery in Baldwin at a later date. Masks are required for those attending and social distancing guidelines will be followed.

Mick was born on November 10, 1931 in Cascade, Iowa to M. Leo and Mary (Picray) Hughes. He faithfully and honorably served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant from 1949-1952, during the Korean War.

On December 3, 1960 he was united in marriage to the love of his life Virginia Morehead in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Mick was an active member of the Maquoketa American Legion Post 75, the VFW in Maquoketa and a former member of the Antique Auto Club of Dubuque.

Mick worked at Sanitary Dairy Company and the county both for over 17 years. He owned Mick’s Bar in Delmar for ten years. He later drove bus.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Virginia and his four children; Lynn (Julie) Hughes of Hiawatha, Lori (Ritch) Skrivseth and Jay (Sherri) Hughes both from Preston and Christopher (Tracey) Hughes of Davenport, ten grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one on the way, his three sisters Terese Cavanagh of Delmar, Sharon Kueterof Oxford, and Linda (Jerry) House of Delmar, two brothers Tony Hughes of Cuba City, Wisconsin and Mike (Jean) Hughes of Coralville and a sister-in-law Aleatha Hughes of Monticello.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters– Irene Claus and Charline Cavanagh, brothers-in-law Bill Cavanagh, Duane Kueter, Wayne Clays and Pat Cavanagh, sister-in-law Shirley Hughes, stepson Dwain Morehead, son Barry Hughes, grandson Cale Hughes and a brother Tom Hughes.

Memorials may be directed to his family in his honor.
