Sharyl A. Hohnecker, 70, of Marion, Iowa, and formerly of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Thursday afternoon, September 24, 2020, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

A funeral mass celebrating her life will be held at 12 P.M., Friday, October 2, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 A.M. on Friday, October 2, 2020, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa.

Masks and social distancing will be required due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Sharyl A. Lopez was born on August 28, 1950 in Dubuque, Iowa, the youngest of three children to Vincent and Virginia (Oberbroeckling) Lopez. She grew up in Dubuque and attended St. Raphael's Grade School and was a 1968 graduate of Dubuque Wahlert High School. She married James "Jim" Hohnecker on June 24, 1972 in Dubuque, Iowa.

Sharyl first worked in Dubuque at Mercy Hospital on the Maternity Floor as a Nurse's Aide. Upon moving to Maquoketa, she worked at Family Clinic as a receptionist for 14 years.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. She enjoyed playing Bingo, camping at the river, and was an avid Notre Dame fan. For many years she and Jim decorated their home with an abundance of lights and decorations at Christmas time and became known by many as the Christmas House in Maquoketa. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, James "Jim" Hohnecker of Marion, IA; a daughter, Katie (Kent) Wedeking of Marion, IA; 3 grandchildren, Allison, Cameron, and Lauren; brothers, Vincent (Sue) Lopez of Dubuque, IA, and Virgil (Jo-El) Lopez of Dubuque, IA; Randy & Vicki Hohnecker of Dubuque, Ron & Lois Kelzer of Dubuque, Tom & Anita Hohnecker of Lake Ozarks, Rick & Deb Hohnecker of Massachusetts, and Ronnie & Elaine Hohnecker of Dubuque; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Sharyl A. Hohnecker memorial fund has been established.
