Dorothy D. Bartels, 93, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

A private graveside service and burial celebrating Dorothy's life will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2020, at Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.

Dorothy Darlene Duhme was born on July 6, 1926 in Jackson County, Iowa, to Henry and Myrtle (Ruff) Duhme. She grew up in rural Jackson County and attended Maquoketa High School. She married Ralph William Bartels on September 14, 1949 in Maquoketa, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Vernon and Merle.

Dorothy was a farm wife and through the years had also worked as a waitress for Hayes Bros. Café, Green Mill Café, and Pronto Pizza. She loved flowers, gardening, and being outside. She was an excellent cook and baker and was known by her family for her famous angel food cake.

Those left to honor Dorothy's memory include her sons, Vernon Bartels of Maquoketa, IA, and Merle Bartels of Maquoketa, IA; a sister-in-law, Jean Duhme of Maquoketa, IA; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph on January 8, 2014, two infant sisters, and three brothers Charlie, Clyde and Oscar.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
