Maquoketa, Ia., Oct. 16--William Dunlap after an illness of several months passed away at his home Monday morning, Oct. 15th, 1917, aged 84 years, July 7th, 1917. "Uncle Bill", as Mr. Dunlap was familiarly known on account of his genial nature and store house of knowledge and interesting anecdotes of early boyhood days experiences in "Old Virginia," could always interest his many friends whenever and wherever he met them. He was a man of considerable inventive genius. His inventions have been many useful ones, which have lessened the burdens of mankind for which he received some royalties and made direct sales, but like many other inventors, the other men received the greatest benefits, but he had the satisfaction of knowing that his life had been fraught with good for others' benefit.

He was brought up a Presbyterian, but for many years attended the Congregational church in this city.

He came to Iowa with his parents, Col. J. W. and wife, Agnes Dunlap, and settled in Brookfield township, Nov. 5th, 1859; and has been prominent in many affairs. He was among the first dealers in thoroughbred cattle, was at one time president of the Jackson County Fair association, was an honored member of Helion lodge of Masons of this city for a great many years, and loved the order.

In November, 1907, Mr. Dunlap and wife left Maquoketa, happy, indeed, over the thoughts of visiting old friends in the state of Old Virginia, and attending the great exposition held at Jamestown, Va., but sickness at Norfolk, which terminated in death, took his companion and life partner suddenly from him, before reaching his destination, which was a fearful blow for him to bear--to bring his loved one back and lay her away in Union cemetery, without either of them realizing the pleasure they started out for.

Out of the following interesting family of brothers and sisters, the Hon. J. W. Dunlap of this city is the only survivor left: Mrs. Mary E. Anderson, Mrs. Eusabia Twist, James H., A. N., and Robert E.

He leaves to mourn his loss one son and one daughter, Geo. Dunlap and Mrs. O. McCaffrey, both of this city, besides several grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Dr. Morgan officiating. Interment at Union church cemetery, by the side of his wife and son, Wallace, and little daughter.
