Maquoketa, Ia., Oct. 27--The funeral of the late W. C. Gordon was held yesterday afternoon at two o'clock from the M.E. church, Rev J. J. Kidder officiating and interment being made in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Mr. Gordon died Tuesday afternoon after an illness of several months. There is scarcely a person in our city or community who did not know "Gil" Gordon. Mr. Gordon's kindly disposition and jovial manners won for him countless friends who deeply deplore his untimely death. Although not enjoying good health for more than a year he rarely offered a complaint and did his utmost to lead his acquaintances to believe that his stamina would serve him well and he would eventually win the battle against the dread malady. Some weeks ago however, the trouble began to gain the upper hand of all medical skill and tender care, and despite his keen desire to remain with us and his grim determination to do so, he continued to fail until death relieved his sufferings.

W. C. Gordon was born Feb. 12, 1858, in the Second ward in the city of Maquoketa and has never made his residence in any other city or in any other word. When a young man he learned the shoemaking business with Cannell & Cravens and for several years worked at his trade with this firm later engaging in the meat market business and subsequently becoming a member of the firm of Gordon & Ely, which was a Maquoketa business house for some years.

Retiring from active business life some years ago he spent portions of the winter months assisting in the Lovelee Shoe Store, devoting the summer season to recreative pastimes, angling being his greatest pleasure, and to go fishing with Gil was a delight in itself as he was a splendid companion and a loyal friend.

In 1881 he was united in marriage to Miss Lizzie Ast, who is left to mourn the loss of a true, faithful husband. For four years he represented his ward in our city council and always took a deep interest in affairs municipal, he himself purchasing a fine bandstand and placing it in the Spaulding park, besides contributing many other items to beautify the grounds. A strong advocate of city progressiveness, he was never in the background when his share and more than his share was needed to aid a commendable city movement.

Besides his bereaved wife, Mr. Gordon leaves one brother, George of Tacoma, Wash.
