Melvin was born February 23, 1925, in Miles, Iowa, the son of Harry and Florence (Cook) Jargo. He graduated from Miles High School with the Class of 1942. Melvin, served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 1st Calvary 7th Regiment in the Philippines and Japan. His brother, George, also served in WWII as a Corporal in the U.S. Army Infantry, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. Their brother, Donald, served in the U.S. Air Force in 1952. All three brothers returned home safely from their service, with Melvin and George settling on the 120 year-old family farm near miles. Melvin was a silent hero when it came to his military service.

Melvin loved farming, buying and raising cattle, and farmed all his life with his brother George. Their grandfather had purchased the land in 1898, when their father, Harry, was just three years old. Both George and Melvin retired from farming in 1987 and moved into town. Melvin was a member of the Miles American Legion Spencer Cook Post #677, and the First Presbyterian Church of Miles.

Melvin will be dearly missed by his many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by three brothers Donald, George and Herbert Jargo; and his parents, Harry and Florence.
