Dorothy L. Ward, 87, of Delmar, IA, died on December 28, 2017, at Genesis Medical Center East in Davenport, IA.

A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held sometime this spring, possibly in April. There is no visitation and burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Delmar, Iowa. The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.

Dorothy Louise Ward was born on April 16, 1930 in Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Walter and Ruth (Collister) Ward. She grew up in Delmar, Iowa, and graduated from Delmar High School and the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA.

Dorothy was an elementary school teacher. She taught for 25 years at Hayes Elementary School in Davenport, IA. She also taught in Elwood, IA and Delmar, IA and also served as a special needs and gifted student specialist in Delmar.

She is survived by two sisters, Marjorie (Cleve) Morse of Marion, IA, and Alyce (Carl) Jenkins of Cedar Falls, IA. She is also survived by three nieces, Julie Morse, Rebekah (Clayton) Campbell, Monica Morse, and three nephews, David Morse, Donald Morse and Thomas Jenkins. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Cleve Morse.

Dorothy's retirement years were brightened by many helpful visits from her niece, Julie Morse, shopping and transportation assistance from friend Joyce Mitchell, and by the frequent expressions of appreciation she received from the many students she helped guide during her long teaching career.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the Delmar United Methodist Church.
