(Special Correspondence)
Maquoketa, Ia. July 9--Maquoketa is sorely grieved in the passing away of Joseph Stohl, aged 38 years and five months. Mr. Stohl was severely burned Saturday afternoon when a fire pot used by tinners exploded in the workshop in the rear of the Ringlep store, his face, arms and body being badly scorched, which burns caused his death as above stated. The Angel of Mercy relieved him of his sufferings Sunday evening at 5:30 o'clock. Deceased was born in Fulton, Iowa, Feb. 9, 1879. The life he lived and the example he set for others to emulate were eloquent indeed. He was a worthy and highly esteemed member of the Baptist church; belonged to the M.B.A. society and was a brave member of the Maquoketa fire team. The same bravery that he had always shown in fighting fires when duty called him out under all conditions of weather he displayed by throwing out the deadly fire pot which cost him his life. He landed it out into the back alley that he might save the woman and child, who were waiting to have some soldering done, from harm. With his passing all mourn and our sympathies go out to the grief-stricken wife and three young children: Alfred Joseph, Phillip and Ruth; the father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Stohl, of this city, four brothers and three sisters, Will, John, Anthony and Charles; Mrs. John McComb, of this city; Mrs. Frank Henry and Mrs. Howard Bodkin, of Maquoketa. Adam Ringlep, the proprietor, and all connected with the Ringlep hardware store, feel Joe's tragic death keenly, as all loved him as a brother.

The funeral will be held at the house Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. Fletcher officiating. Interment will be made at Mt. Hope cemetery.

Maquoketa, Iowa, July 12--One of the saddest and most touching funerals ever held in this city was that of Joe Stahl, who died Sunday evening from the effects of burns received the day before. The relatives were many, while hundreds turned out to take a last look at the remains of a young man whose life and example set for others to follow must be a satisfaction to the mourners. The fire department, of which he was a member, turned out almost to a man. The Fire King auto truck was draped in mourning, besides being bedecked with beautiful and fragrant flowers, as was also the casket.
