Maquoketa, Ia., March 9--On Wednesday evening the people of Otter Creek vicinity were shocked when it became known that Miss Mary Courtney had died very suddenly at about 4 o'clock p.m. at her home while assisting with the household duties, death resulting from apoplexy.

Although Miss Courtney had been in poor health for over a year, being afflicted with nerve trouble, she was always able to be around and of late her condition was much improved, so that her death came as a terrible shock to her relatives and friends.

Mary Courtney was the eldest daughter of the late James and Rosana Courtney, and was born in Perry township, Jan. 20, 1865, and died Feb. 28, 1917.

When quite young she removed with her parents to Otter Creek township, where she has since resided and where she had hosts of friends whom she had won by her kindness and her happy disposition. Deceased is survived by three brothers, Joseph, Dan and Thomas Courtney, all residing on the old homestead, and by one sister, Mrs. Agnes Hayes, also of Otter Creek, besides many other relatives and friends, who are grieved to hear of her death, and who extend their sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

The funeral was held on Friday morning from the home to St. Lawrence's church, where services were conducted by Rev. Loughnane, after which the remains were laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery beside those of her parents, who preceded her in death several years ago.

The pallbearers were Messrs. Will Beck, Frank McKenna, T. J. Lambe, Martin Crane, James Hickson and Daniel McCarthy.
