Obituary for Marlin Hoffmann
Marlin Hoffmann, age 88, of Spragueville, Iowa passed away Saturday, July 13, 2019 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 18, 2019 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Wounded Warriors Project. Marlin was born June 25, 1931, in Elvira, Iowa, the son of Bernhardt and Anna (Kruse) Hoffmann. He graduated from Calamus High School in 1949. Marlin served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was deployed to Germany with the 1279th Engineer Battalion. While attending Radio Operator School in Germany, Marlin was deployed to assist the country of Holland during the devastating 1953 North Sea Flood with setting up radio communications. He spent three weeks there and received special thanks from Holland’s Queen Juliana for his work. After returning home, Marlin married Nola Jean Struble on May 19, 1957 in The Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa. Marlin would say with a smile, “I learned to compromise after I met Nola.” They raised a daughter Kay, and celebrated 48 years of marriage, until Nola’s passing in 2005.

Besides doing some cabinet making, concrete work and farming, Marlin worked 18 years as a carpenter for G.L. Stockham & Son. He then went into the carpentry business for himself. Marlin was a member of the Am Vets in Preston and American Legion in Spragueville. He was a past member on the Jackson County Historical Society. Marlin served as a councilman of Spragueville for 54 years. He enjoyed all kinds of woodworking.

Marlin will be dearly missed by his sister Darlene (Kenneth) Jeffries of Davenport, Iowa; two sister-in-laws, Marie Hoffmann and Joy Eads; several nieces, one nephew; great nieces and great nephews.

Marlin is preceded in death by his parents Bernhardt and Anna, wife Nola, daughter Kay in 2008, brother Delbert, brother-n-law Charles Eads, and nieces Karen Bush and Kendra Jeffries.
