Vern was born on August 1, 1924, in rural LaMotte, the son of Nicholas and Margaret (Capesius) Weber. He attended St. Donatus Catholic School through 8th grade. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943 – 1946. Vern took part in an Honor Flight in 2010 and for the first time began to speak about his wartime naval experiences.

After meeting Lorraine Naumann at Melody Mill, they wed on August 31, 1948, at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Sherrill, IA. He worked at the Adams Company in Dubuque, IA, after the war until he started farming in 1950. He and Lorraine farmed east of St. Donatus until Vern officially retired at the age of 91. He was a lifelong member of St. Donatus Catholic Church and held many positions serving the parish. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and Bellevue American Legion Post #273, and was a Tete des Morts Township Trustee for many years.

Vern enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping (including skunks), as well as dancing and playing euchre. He was a member of a card club for 40+ years.

Vern met many challenges throughout his life including not letting a bull or breast cancer slow him down. He had a sweet tooth that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He loved his family very much and was proud of his military service.

The family requests no flowers. A Vernon H. Weber memorial fund has been created which will be distributed among his favorite charities.

Vern’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Jackson County, his doctors and nurses, and his home health care aides, Phyllis, Kathy, and Leslie for providing exceptional care during his final journey.
