Alvara A. Schmidt, 93, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at her home in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A funeral mass celebrating Alvara's life will be held at 11 A.M., Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, and again after 10 A.M. Thursday at the church. A 3:30 P.M. Rosary will be recited on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa.

Alvara Ann Deppe was born on January 4, 1926 in Springbrook, Iowa, to Louis and Irene (Kielhold) Deppe. She grew up in Springbrook and attended Springbrook Catholic School. She married John Ambrose "Jimmy" Schmidt on May 7, 1946 in Springbrook, Iowa. He preceded her in death on February 8, 2005.

Alvara first farmed with her husband in the Bellevue/Springbrook area moving to Maquoketa in 1966. She then worked for Western Auto as a sales clerk for 15 years and later for Jackson State Bank as a teller for 8 years.

Alvara was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa and a 50-year member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Raphael #1156. Additionally, she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Past President's. She enjoyed playing euchre, bowling, visiting area casinos, and being on the river. Most importantly she loved spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren's activities.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Paulette (Gary) DuVall of Hanover, IN, Bob (Pam) Schmidt of Dubuque, IA, Dale (Judy) Schmidt of Maquoketa, IA, Doug (Sandy) Schmidt of Morris, IL, Virgil (Jody) Schmidt of Maquoketa, IA, and Annette (Edward) Lechtenberg of Maquoketa, IA; a daughter-in-law, Barb Grimm of Charlotte, IA; sisters, Karen Gonner of Bellevue, IA, and Dianne (Harvey Jr.) Seiler of Bellevue, IA; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend Jim Otruba of Leisure Lake, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Dean, brothers Kenneth, Kermit and Gene Deppe, and 2 grandchildren Jonathan Schmidt and Peter Schmidt.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Hospice of Jackson County.
