Maquoketa, Iowa, Oct. 4--The funeral of Mrs. James Carter who passed away Friday evening at her home on South Second street, after an illness of several months, was held from the home yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. C. H. Fletcher of the Baptist church officiating. Interment was in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Cynthia Ann West was born in Bethel, Clarmont county, Ohio, April 17, 1841, where she grew to young womanhood. In June 1862, she was married to James Carter, they coming to Maquoketa in 1882, in which city they have since made their home. To this union were born seven children, three of whom, with the husband, survive. Misses Callie and Anna and Mr. Claire Carter, all of this city.

In the passing of Mrs. Carter another one of Maquoketa's good women has been called to her reward, and although the last few months of her life were marked with suffering, she bore up patiently, ever hoping that the Maker would grant her a longer lease of life and that medical skill and tender care would finally triumph. In her passing there goes from the home a loving wife and mother, whose affiliation to home ties was most pronounced. Early in life she became affiliated with the Methodist church and all through the years had lived a true Christian life that was filled with kindly deeds and good works. She was a charter member of the local Women's Relief Corps and when health would permit took active and enthusiastic interest in the work of her order.
