Maquoketa, Ia., Feb. 11.--Benjamin Phelps of this city passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 10, 1916. He was born Sept. 8, 1832, in the state of New York. His father, John Phelps, was born in the same state. His mother's name was Sawyer, and she was born in Vermont. For a great many years before coming to Maquoketa, Mr. Phelps lived alongside of the church just across the track east of Elwood on a fine farm. He was a great lover of fast horses in those earlier days, and generally had some fine ones entered at the different fairs in Iowa and Illinois, and was known far and near. He was a genial hearted man. He has been in failing health a number of years and leaves a wife and three sons, Samuel at home, George of Clinton and John of Lost Nation. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday, Rev. Bartholomew officiating.
