Lyda M. Herrig, 92, of Dubuque, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, at Church of the Nativity, where Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Msgr. James Miller will officiate. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, LaMotte, following the luncheon. Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Lyda was born February 11, 1926 in Bellevue, the daughter of Alex and Bernice (Pollock) Berthel. She married Merlin Herrig on August 24, 1948 at St. John's Catholic Church, Andrew, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 29, 2006.

Lyda graduated from University of Dubuque, and started her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse near LaMotte. Throughout the years, she taught in LaMotte and Key West. Lyda and Merlin raised their family on a farm near LaMotte.

She was an avid bingo and card player, and volunteered as a 4-H leader. Lyda was a member of Nativity Parish.

Lyda is survived by her children Phyllis (Tim) Chantos of Dewitt, IA, Marilyn (Mel) Berendes of Dubuque, and Don Herrig of Dubuque; six grandchildren, Chad (Nancy) Berendes of Dubuque, Mike (Julie) Berendes of Zionsville, IN, Brad (Misty) Herrig of Iowa City, Jeff Herrig of LeClaire, WI, Chris (Amie) Chantos of Davenport, IA, and Jill (Alex) Noel of LaHonda, CA; 16 great grandchildren; her brother, Donald (Pat) Berthel of LaMotte; two sisters, Mary Lou Mottet of Cedar Rapids, IA and Algean Nemmers of Bellevue; and a sister in law, Evelyn (Merlin) Lenz of Dubuque.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kimberly Herrig; a granddaughter in law, Kristi Berendes; and two brothers in law, George Mottet and Virgil Nemmers.

Memorials will be donated to Lyda's favorite charities.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque; Stonehill Care Center; and the nurses at Mercy Medical Center.
