Obituary for Larry Lee Peterson
Larry Lee Peterson, age 78, of Sabula, Iowa, passed away on December 4, 2018, at his home near Sabula. Cremation Rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Larry’s life will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Monday, December 10, 2018 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, Illinois. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Burial of his cremated remains will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Sabula United Methodist Church, Camp Courageous in Monticello or Genesis Hospice of the Quad Cities in Larry’s memory. Larry was born on October 10, 1940, to Glen and Jane (Hodges) Peterson in Savanna. Larry graduated from the Sabula High School with the Class of 1957. Larry was united in marriage to Shirley Heckelsmiller of Bellevue, Iowa on April 5, 1959 in the First Presbyterian Church in Bellevue. They were the proud parents of 3 daughters, Barbara, Lori and Terri.

Larry started farming on the family farm in 1959. Larry and Shirley raised their family and lived on the same farm until his passing. In his early years, Larry was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He enjoyed watching wildlife in the “swamp” from his picture window until his passing. Larry and Shirley loved to travel and were fortunate enough to visit all 50 states and several places overseas. Larry was a member of the Sabula United Methodist Church, the Bellevue Chapter #359 Order of the Eastern Star and the Lyons Masonic Lodge. Over the years, Larry served on many Committees including the FSA for over 50 years, the Jackson County Zoning, Township Trustee, and Church Offices.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley; three daughters, Barbara (Dennis) Kelley of Fulton, Illinois, Lori (Tim) Welsh of rural Sabula and Terri “Red” McCulley of rural Sabula; three grandchildren, Michael Wacker of Springfield, Missouri, Katherine Kelley of Fulton and Aaron McCulley of Sabula; three sisters, Sherry (John) Horst of Sabula, Margo Rockrohr of Clinton and Mary Lou (Gordon) Parks of Clinton; and one brother, Richard (Donna) Peterson of Sabula. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in- law, Don Rockrohr.
