Obituary for Charles K. Lane
Charles K. Lane, age 73, of Preston, Iowa, died on Friday, June 29, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at the Preston United Methodist Church. Burial will take place in Sterling Cemetery, rural Miles, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 2, 2018 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sabula Izaak Walton League, the Preston United Methodist Church, Together We Build: Jackson County Fair and Extension, or the Jackson County Historical Society in Charles memory.

Charles was born on October 16, 1944, the son of Louis and Thelma (Gray) Lane in Clinton, Iowa. He attended Preston High School and graduated with the Class of 1962. Charles married the love of his life, Linda Carstensen on August 27, 1967 in the Miles Methodist Church.

After graduation, Charles worked with his father on the family farm. In 1965, Charles bought their current family farm, which was located about a mile from his home farm. Charles and his wife, Linda moved onto the farm as soon as they were married in 1967. Along with raising three children, they grew crops and tended to cattle and hogs. Charles was a “Steward of the Land” and was awarded the Region 4, Iowa Soil and Conservation Award multiple times. He was also involved with many other organizations, including the Sabula Izaak Walton League, the Jackson County Cattlemen Association, the Jackson County Pork Producers, the Eastern Iowa Hay Producers, the Jackson County N.R.C.S., and he served as a past Director for the Miles Savings Bank. He was also a past 4-H Leader and was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Family Hall of Fame in 2013. Charles was a lifetime member of the Preston United Methodist Church. Charles also enjoyed the outdoors, especially planting trees and shrubs to create wildlife habitats and raccoon hunting. Most of all, Charles loved spending time with his family and friends.

Charles will be dearly missed by his wife, Linda; three children, Douglas (Nancy) Lane of Spragueville, Iowa, Jennifer (John) Stender of Baldwin, Iowa, and Mark (Brianna) Lane of Davenport, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, Kayla, Cambrie, and Cortlyn Lane, Sydney and Lane Stender, and Charlie, Mary, Tim, Joe, Henry, Isaac, and Matthew Lane; two brothers, Robert Lane of Newton, Iowa, and Leland (Jeanette) Lane of Preston, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Thelma; one sister in-law, Joan Lane; and one infant grandchild.
