Charles Ernest Kruse, Jr., age 80, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away November 3, 2017 at his daughter’s home surrounded by family following an extended illness.
Born December 24, 1936 in Lyons, Iowa to Charles E. and Mathilde (Bell) Kruse, Chuck grew up in Maquoketa, where he graduated from high school. Throughout his adult life, Chuck farmed north of Maquoketa. Prior to retiring he also worked as an RTA bus driver for Jackson County. He enjoyed nature and in the 1960s helped pour the sidewalks at the Maquoketa Caves State Park. He also enjoyed sports and helped coach girls’ basketball at the junior high level as the program was developing. His hobbies included running his hunting dogs, working with horses, and some travel. He appreciated conservation and stewardship of the land and liked good food, farm sales, and attending his children and grandchildren’s school activities.
Chuck is survived by his children, Kelly (Peter) Nelles of Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, Kris (John) Hays of DeWitt, Korey Harmon and Kraig (Judy) Kruse of Maquoketa; eight grandchildren, Pierce and Grace Nelles, Ryanne (Mike) Trusty and Austin (Megan) Till, Kailey and Kole Harmon, and Jake and Justin Kruse; and four great grandchildren, Niya, Kolt, Knox and Gretchen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his three sisters Ella Kruse Naeve, Elizabeth Rathje and Marian H. Britch, and his infant brother, Carl.
In keeping with Chuck’s wishes a private family service is planned. The family extends their gratitude to Hospice of Jackson County for their care and support.
