Darrell was born on June 25, 1937, the son of Howard and Pearl (Baker) Daniels in Green Island, Iowa. He attended Green Island Country School and later attended Miles High School, graduating with the class of 1954. Darrell worked for the Milwaukee Railroad, Clinton Engines of Maquoketa, John L. Franks of Miles, and Jackson County Maintenance Department until his retirement. He married Barbara Wagemester on April 28, 1962 in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Clinton and they made their home in Miles. Darrell and Barbara were members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Preston.

Darrell “Short” was an avid outdoorsman, card player, and sports enthusiast. He grew up learning about nature in and around his hometown of Green Island and along the Maquoketa River. He loved fishing, hunting, and trapping. He was an expert card player who rarely passed up a game of euchre, pinochle, or poker. His favorite sports teams included the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bears. Short served as a little league coach and umpire and attended his children’s baseball and softball games, never passing up the chance to give advice or offer suggestions before, during and after a game!

Short greatly enjoyed the company of others and offered a smile, a wave or a whistle to friends and strangers alike. In addition to much colorful banter at family gatherings, Short never missed a chance to “shoot the breeze” with farmers at the Feed Mill, customers around town as he was delivering papers, or passersby on the road, while sitting with neighbors watching the traffic go by.

Short’s wife, Barbara, suffered an aneurysm in 1996 and underwent extensive rehabilitation at a variety of facilities for over 13 years. Short visited her daily at the Alverno in Clinton where she resided for the majority of those years. He continued to live in Miles until moving to assisted living and memory care the past few years. His family truly appreciates all the wonderful staff who cared for him.

Darrell is survived by three sons, Mark (Colleen), Thomas (Ikuyo), and Paul (Candace); two daughters, Teresa (Loran) Jacobsen and Mary (David) Horst; twelve grandchildren: Lee (Amanda), Matthew, Zachary, Caitlynn, Annie (Erik), Nathan (Erin), Ellie (Kyzer), Serina, Kiyora, Riana, Monroe and Harrison; four great-grandchildren, Jack, Lydia and Sophia Wolter and Hayden Jacobsen; two brothers, Stan (Judi) and Lary; and one sister, Rita Powers.

Darrell is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; an infant daughter, Ann Marie; a grandson, Andrew Jacobsen; brothers, Wayne and Harlan Daniels; and sister Nancy Lou Daniels.
