Merlin Herrig 79, of LaMotte, Iowa, died Monday, May 29, 2006, at his home.

Merlin was born October 19, 1926 in LaMotte, Iowa, to Joseph and Lena "Ties" Herrig. He married Lyda Berthel, August 24, 1948 at St. John's Catholic Church in Andrew, Iowa.

He farmed in the LaMotte area for over twenty years; worked in construction, ended his career working in the maintenance department at Mercy Medical Center for ten years. He was a veteran of the army during World War II.

He was an Avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, was a handyman who could fix anything, loved any type of wood-working, gardening and all outdoore activities, and especially being with his grandchildren.

He was a member of Holy Rosary parish, Knights of Columbus Post 9236, American Legion Post of Bellevue, Iowa and a 4-H Leader for many years.

Survivors are his wife, Lyda Herring of LaMotte; a son, Don Herrig, of Dubuque, Iowa; two daughters, Marilyn Mel Berendes, of Dubuque, Iowa and Phyllis Tim Chantos, of DeWitte, Iowa, six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one sister, Evelyn Melvin Lenz, of LaMotte.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Kimberly Herrig, a grand daughter-in-law, Kristi Berendes;three brothers, Melvin, Robert and Isadore Herrig; and one sister, Lucille Noonan.
