Joseph H. Fayram, whose death occurred last week Tuesday, at his home in Monmouth, Jackson Co., was born at Preston, Lancashire, England, July 11, 1839. He came to America when a boy and lived a few years at Province, R. I., then came to Canton, Ia., where he grew to manhood. When the war broke out he realized his country's need and enlisted in Co. K., 56th Illinois volunteers. He served the cause faithfully as a private, then a mechanical man.

On Jan. 11, 1864, he was married at Rollo Mission to Miss Ellen Mills. To this union eleven children were born: Thos. E. who died in infancy while on steamer from St. Louis to Dubuque and was buried at Montour, Ia.; Frank K. of Monmouth; Alice E, who died when but two years of age; Charles H., of Los Angeles, Cal.; Martin J. of Monmouth; Arthur J. of Onslow; Melvin R. of Clarence; Leroy B. of Calamus, who died Dec. 24, 1905; Ernest M. of Clinton; and Alonzo M. of Monmouth. Mr. Fayram was a member of A. P. Hovey Post G.A.R.

The services were held in the M. E. church, Rev. B. A. Davis officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Monmouth cemetery.
