BERNARD, Iowa - Patrick J. Burke, 71, of 24096 Bernard Road, Bernard, died after a brief illness at 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, rural Bernard. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Cascade American Legion Post 528. The Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Burke worked for the Jackson County Road Department and with the Orland Besler Construction Co. He later worked at John Deere Dubuque Works and farmed in the Bernard area.

He was born on Aug. 31, 1928, in Bernard, son of Earl and Madeline (McDonnell) Burke. He married Eleanor Kurt on Aug. 5, 1952, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cascade.

He received his education in the rural Bernard schools and was a graduate of the former St. Patrick's High School, Bernard. He was a World War II and Korean War Marine Corps First Division veteran. He was a member of St. Patrick's Parish, Garryowen, rural Bernard, and its altar and rosary society. He also was a member of the Cascade American Legion Post 528 and the United Automobile Workers Local 94.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Burke, of Bernard; two sons, Mike Burke (and his friend, Coleen Takes), of Bernard, and Jerry (Jan) Burke, of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Diane (Steve) Frank, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Sharon (Raymond) Garcia, of Rockford, Ill.; six grandchildren, Ben and Kurt Garcia, Tim and Annette Frank and Daniel and Lauren Burke; two brothers, Dale (Theresa) Burke, of Sun City, Ariz., and Larry (Bev) Burke, of San Antonio; and a sister, Lois Scarff, of Olathe, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Madeline Burke; a brother, Howard Burke; and a sister, Janis Tetterton.

A Patrick J. Burke Memorial Fund has been established.
