BERNARD, Iowa - Raymond P. McDonnell, 72, 607 Leffler St., Bernard, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 1997, at Mercy Health Center St. Joseph's Unit, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, rural Bernard. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Cascade American Legion Post 528. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m.

Mr. McDonnell was a feed sales representative for Pillsbury and Hubbard Feeds for many years. He was then employed as a USDA Meat Inspector at the former FDL Foods Inc., Dubuque.

He was born on Sept. 14, 1924, in Bernard, son of Neil and Mary Ann (Curtis) McDonnell. He married Carlene Noonan on Oct. 5, 1948, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen.

He graduated from the former St. Patrick's High School, in Bernard. He was a World War II Marine veteran, having served at Marshall Islands, Guam Marianas Islands, and Ryukyu Islands in Okinawa, from May 1943 to December 1945.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Parish, and its altar and rosary society and the Cascade American Legion Post 528. Raymond was a very devoted husband, father, pa-pa and brother.

Surviving are his wife, Carlene McDonnell, of Bernard; two daughters, Janella (Jerry) Millard, of Dubuque, and LeaAnn (Jerry) Shaddox, of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren, Marnie, Shawn and Shane Shaddox and Layne Millard; a brother, Ambrose McDonnell, of Bernard; five sisters, Anita Wolbers, of Dubuque, Estelle Cox, of Maquoketa, Mary Clare Driscoll, of Cascade, Margaret Ryan, of Bernard, and Mrs. Ed (Theresa) Melloy, of Dubuque; and two sisters-in-law, Carmie McDonnell-Decker and Kathleen McDonnell, both of Bernard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Payne; and three brothers, Ignatius, Joseph and Paul.

A Raymond P. McDonnell Memorial Fund has been established.
