AUSTIN, Texas - Jeanne Ketchum Cannon, 83, of Austin, died at 2 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005. She died of complications of a stroke at Cornerstone Hospital, Austin.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, rural Bernard, Iowa, with the Rev. Daniel Krapfl officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where there will be a flag presentation by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may gather from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque.

She was born on June 25, 1922, in Chicago, daughter of George and Wanda Ketchum, and survived her sister, Winifred Piper, and brother, Dr. William F. Ketchum. She grew up in Evanston, Ill.

She married her husband-to-be in Evanston, and joined the WAVES for the remainder of World War II.

After the war, she and her husband lived on the University of Chicago campus, where she worked in the library and attended the university for two years, and gave birth to her first child, Julia Amy.

After graduation, she and her husband moved to Washington, D.C., where he began a career as a civil servant in the United States Government. They returned to work at the University of Chicago in the mid to late 1950s, and then went back to Washington during the 1960s, where her husband participated in the development of the Great Society programs, and back to Chicago in the 1970s, interrupted by a brief tour for her husband as Dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University in Texas, and then a return to the University of Chicago in 1976. They retired in 1989 to Austin.

The other three children are Dominic Seth Cannon, born 1952; William Merlin Cannon, born 1955; and Robert White Cannon, born 1961. The first child, Julia Amy, was married to Mark Kable, and they have two sons, Justin and Tristan. They live in Davis, Calif. William Merlin has a son, Robert. Robert White is married to Sandra Cannon, and they have two children, Patrick and Kathleen.

Her husband, William Bernard Cannon, was the son of Charles B. and Irma Cannon, both Iowans, Charles being born in Bernard to William Bernard Cannon and Mary Feeney. His oldest child, Jeanne's husband, William Bernard, was born in Cascade in 1920. The family moved around from Cascade to St. Paul, Minn., back to Dubuque in the 1930s, and then to Chicago, where they remained. The Charles Cannons included not only William, but Robert (deceased), Mary O'Leary, of Toledo, Ohio, Dominic Paul (deceased) and Patricia Rice (deceased).
