James Cannon, Beloved Citizen, Enters Into Rest

Longtime Bernard Resident Interred Tuesday Morning

James Cannon, 81, well known farmer of the Bernard vicinity, passed away Saturday at 7:30 o'clock P.M., at Mercy Hospital, Dubuque, following a lingering illness.

He was born March 2nd, 1863 at Benton, Wis., son of the late William and Susanna Cannon. He was married September 18, 1888 to Margaret Cain at St. Patrick's Church, Garryowen. Mr. and Mrs. Cannon lived on their farm until the death of the latter 32 years ago. For several years he has been making his home with his son, Joseph.

Mr. Cannon always took an active interest in the affairs of his community, was an honest and upright citizen. His friends were legion and this is best evidenced by the large number attending the obsequies.

Surviving are two sons – Joseph, Bernard, and George of Chicago, four daughters, Mrs. Mike (Grace) Maloney, Mrs. Frank (Anna) Ronek, Mrs. Charles (Mary) O'Brien and Mrs. Joe (Linda) Sheehan, all of Bernard. He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter and three sons.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning from the Devaney Funeral Home to St. Patrick's Church, Garryowen at 9:30 o'clock with The Rev. Fr. Patrick F. Malone, officiating at the Requiem Mass. Interment was in St. Patrick's cemetery.

Pall bearers were Mike Maloney, Joe Sheehan, Frank Ronek, Charles O'Brien, William McGeever and Joe McGeever.

Those from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. George Cannon and Mike Maloney of Chicago, and Mr. O'Connell and daughter of Lenox, Iowa.
