Helen M. McCarthy, 89, of 2955 Kaufmann Ave., died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center - Dubuque.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Nativity Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, North Garryowen, rural Bernard, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St.

She was born on March 27, 1914, in Bernard, daughter of John and Loretta (Carew) Donovan. She married Leslie J. McCarthy on Feb. 9, 1932, at Assumption Church, Sylvia Switch, rural Zwingle, Iowa; he preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 1975.

Mrs. McCarthy worked at Clinton Machine in Maquoketa, Iowa; The University of Dubuque and Ennoble Manor in Dubuque. She and her husband also owned a business in Bernard.

Helen was a member of Nativity Parish and their Rosary Society.

Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Dorothy J. McCarthy, of Dubuque; seven grandchildren, Sheila (Greg) Setter, of Austin, Texas, Maryann McCarthy of Laurel, Md., Ronald (Jayne) McCarthy, Mark (Gina) McCarthy and Lisa McCarthy, all of Dubuque, Julie (Robert) Gentz, of Eldridge, Iowa, and Janet McCarthy of Cedar Falls, Iowa; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, the Most Rev. Paul V. Donovan, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and two sisters, Maureen Donovan of the Sisters of Charity of Bay City, Mich., and Bernadine Clinton, of Grand Rapids, Mich.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Ron J.; two brothers, John "J.T." and Leonard; and three sisters, Maureen Curtis, Rita McCarthy and Elizabeth McCarthy, in infancy.

A Helen M. McCarthy Memorial Fund has been established.
