The Grim Harvest of Death

Mrs. James Ryan

While the remains of her brother Patrick Reddin were being laid to rest last Sunday Mrs. James Ryan of Ozark was lying unconscious in her last illness, after months of ill health and so it was not surprising when the announcement was made on Monday that she had passed, away at an early hour of the morning of that day, although the news was sorrowful to the many relatives and friends and acquaintances of the estimable lady.

Mrs. Ryan was born in Somerset, Perry county, Ohio, in June, 1831, and was therefore over 71 years old. With her parents she came to Garryowen in 1841, remaining, at home on the farm until her marriage to James Ryan in 1856. They took up their residence in Ozark where they lived continuously until two years ago since which time they have lived on the farm two miles from the village.

Mrs. Ryan was a lady of estimable and Christian virtues and generally beloved for her sincerity and womanly attributes. Her death is a loss to the community. She is survived by her aged husband, now in poor health, and the following children: John, of Park City, Utah; Mrs. Agnes Moore, Winthrop, la.; Desk Sergeant James Ryan of the Dubuque city police force; M. Ryan, Boise City, Idaho; Mrs. Lizzie Mahony of Dubuque; Mrs. Nellie Connell, Temple Hill; and William and Maurice at home. The survivors of her father's family are enumerated in the preceding obituary of her brother, Patrick Reddin.

The funeral was held on Wednesday at St. Patrick's church, Garryowen with Rev. Father Kelly officiating.

Compliments of Joseph Cahill
