Chas. Smyth

One of Dubuque county's most beloved citizens, Chas. F. Smyth, died Saturday at 2:30 o'clock in the morning following a lingering illness. A noble Christian gentleman, a civic leader and good businessman, Charley Smyth was a great credit to the community in which he lived throughout his existence. Everyone who knew him well joins this newspaper in deeply mourning his demise. Mr. Smyth was a fervent and consistent Catholic and a charter member of Cascade council No. 930 of Knights of Columbus. Just recently he was awarded the Honorary Life Membership of the aforementioned order at the official ceremony in Cascade.

Charles F., the son of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Smyth, was born May 8, 1858 on the family homestead near Bernard. He was engaged in farming and business successfully until his retirement several years ago. On Oct. 2, 1891 he was married to Miss Sabina Cox who died June 3, 1905 and in 1912 he was married to Miss Mary McGeever who died May 17, 1928.

Surviving are his children, Mrs. John (Mary) Lamey of Monmouth, Mrs. Leo (Madeline) Kinsella of Garryowen, and C. F. Smyth, Jr., of Detroit, Mich; also by three brothers, George of St. Paul, Frank and Burt of Dubuque. He was preceded in death by five children besides Mrs. Geraldine Merritt who died more recently.

Funeral services were conducted from the Lamey home to the Catholic church in Baldwin, with interment in the cemetery at North Garryowen. Officiating at the mass of requiem and graveside prayers was Father Smith of Baldwin.

Casket bearers were Jos. Anglish, Michael Kinsella, Lew and Walter Melloy, Wm. Dunn, Jos. McGeever, Hubert Donovan and Jos. Nolan.

Compliments of Joseph Cahill
